THE WORLDS FIRST 3D PRINTED CAR

sTRATI hISTORY

In 2014 a small team of dedicated enthusiasts changed the way we all think about 3D printing. We built an all new Big Area Additive Manufacturing System that used reinforced thermoplastic to make large durable parts. We printed the main structure of a car in less than two days at IMTS in Chicago. It was machined to allow smooth areas and parts were left where you could see the strati or layers. A team from Local Motors added a drivetrain and suspension from a Renault Twizy and it was driven out of McCormick Place. The ensuing avalanche of notoriety and press was unprecedented in manufacturing machinery world.

In 2022 when Local Motors liquidated their assets the Strati was purchased by Rick Neff, of RICK NEFF, LLC. in order to preserve the rich history of big additive manufacturing.

The photo above is of the Strati at IMTS 2024 where the 10th anniversary of the feat of printing a car at a trade show was celebrated.
